Founded in the early 1960s, Flos was born of a bold vision: to transform lamps into objects capable of changing the way we live, not just in Italy, but all over the world. From the outset, the brand has been committed to reinventing artificial lighting, a mission that has led it to become a benchmark in lighting design.
The Flos story begins with the initiative of Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina, who, in collaboration with importer Arturo Eisenkeil, explored new materials and stylistic approaches. They have worked alongside renowned designers such as Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, as well as Afra and Tobia Scarpa, to create innovative lighting fixtures. These collaborations gave rise to iconic lamps like the Taraxacum and Fantasma, using the “cocoon” technique invented in the USA and experimented with by Eisenkeil.
In 1972, Flos was catapulted onto the international scene with the exhibition “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” at MoMA in New York. This recognition marks the start of a significant expansion for the brand. The 1970s and 1980s saw an increase in production, the opening of foreign subsidiaries and the enrichment of the product catalog, thanks in particular to the acquisition of Arteluce, founded by Gino Sarfatti.
